DIP-SEQ

DIP-SEQ

A performing layer laid over DIP-VAL, with more to it than DIP-VAL itself. That also makes it the harder of the two to feel your way around, so DIP-VAL first is the easier path.

Controls

To begin
Press START, then switch scenes with pads 1 to 8. Until it settles, DROP and FILL are enough on their own.
START
Start and stop. For four hundred milliseconds after a press it ignores the next one, so a double press mid-performance will not stop the music.
TAP / − +
TAP reads the tempo from the interval you beat out; − and + move it by one. The reading appears in the band above.
SCENE / 1 to 8
Room for eight scenes. SCENE opens the pads; press SAVE then a number and the whole of the present state goes in. A number on its own recalls it, and DEL then a number clears it. SAVE and DEL disarm themselves after six seconds.
What a scene holds
The mutes and solos, the eight effects with their amounts, and for each piece of material its position, length, rate, level, placement and filter, along with every value from DEN to BPM. It is a copy of the settings rather than of the sound, so nothing breaks when one is recalled.
Q
How long a scene change waits: nought, one, two, four or eight bars, cycling with each press. At nought it lands at once; otherwise it holds until the next boundary. The pad blinks while it waits, and pressing the same number again calls it off.
DROP
While held, the kick, snare, bass, click, tick and stab fall silent. The chords and pads stay, so the floor drops out from under them. Releasing restores whatever was muted before.
FILL
While held, STUT goes to 0.95 and GLCH rises by 0.4, and two steps taken from the first half of the pattern repeat for eight. Releasing puts the values back.
RISE
While held, the filter opens towards nine thousand hertz over sixteen beats and the treble lifts with it. It stops wherever you let go, then settles back.
CUT
Silences everything for as long as you hold it: down in six milliseconds, back in thirty, so the edges do not click.
VAR
Moves to the next pattern. It is the NEXT of DIP-VAL, here with a guard of two hundred and fifty milliseconds between presses.
The MIX tab
The upper row — DR, BS, CH, FR, PD, ML, PNG, ECO — switches the layers; the lower row — KICK, SNR, BASS, CLIK, TICK, STAB, CHRD — mutes them one at a time. The knobs are BEAT for the weight of the beat, CHD for the chords, STUT for repetition and COMP for compression.
The FX tab
Eight effects: STT, FLT, REV, CRS, DLY, FLG, GAT, RNG. Press to switch one on, select its name, then set the amount below. FX OFF clears them all, HEAL recovers the sound if it has thinned out, AUTO and NEXT reach through to DIP-VAL, and MST is the master level.
The TONE tab
Everything to do with tone. NOISE cycles the four settings, SQR the waveform, KEY opens the key panel and PAL the palette. MAT swaps the material, SEED the seed, RND re-rolls everything and CC0 fetches external samples. ENV is the envelope, BASS has six voices and KICK and SNR five each. With BPM LOCK on, recalling a scene leaves the tempo alone.
The MORE tab
The original DIP-VAL panel, unchanged. The fine adjustments are made here.
PROG — the chord sequence
Up to sixteen chords in a row. Tap a name to select it, then set ROOT and CHORD. bars is how long it is held, and PUSH how early the next one arrives: 1 is a sixteenth, 2 an eighth, 3 a dotted eighth, and at A it lands on the last kick or snare before the change.
PROG — PRESET / FR / BANK / LOCK / RUN
PRESET steps through the prepared sequences. With FR on, the fragments follow the chords too. BANK builds separate material for each chord, which takes a moment. LOCK fixes the present key, and RUN sets the sequence going — the same switch as CHG in the PLAY tab.
SET / STEP / RUN
SET holds the order of the scenes. + STEP adds one, each with a scene number and a length in bars, up to thirty-two. LOOP returns to the first at the end. RUN in the PLAY tab starts it moving and stops it again. STEP is a different thing: it turns on editing the pattern directly on screen.
SET CODE
Writes the scenes, their order, Q and the chord sequence out as one string. EXPORT produces it, COPY takes it, and pasting it into the field on another device and pressing IMPORT restores the lot. An unreadable string shows ERROR.
DEN / GLC / SPC / HI
The four that stay at the foot of every tab, and the ones most often under the fingers: density, grain, space and treble.
The watchdog
A held button that never receives its release — after switching away from the page, say — would leave the sound stopped, so anything held is let go automatically after forty-five seconds. The same catch covers a finger whose lifting went unnoticed.
